What to Wear for Your Boudoir Shoot

It’s the most common question I get as a boudoir photographer…”What should I wear to my shoot?” For the full boudoir experience which includes a 60 minute photo session, women typically have 2 outfit changes for a total of 3 outfits.  Among the most popular choices are bodysuits, lingerie, teddies, bra and panty sets, oversized sweaters, or a combination of all of the above.  Sometimes women also like to bring along an item of their partner’s like their work shirt or a sports jersey that they pair with a bra and panty set which is a fun look that the guys go crazy over. 😉

When should you start shopping for your outfits?

As soon as you book your shoot!  Especially if you are ordering online, you want to make sure to allow plenty of time for them to deliver incase they don’t fit properly and you need to return them for a different size.  If you don’t have as much time before your shoot, I would recommend going into your local Victoria’s Secret and ask them to measure you first and to bring out flattering options for you.

Here’s a breakdown of what women typically choose to wear to their shoots and why…

The Bodysuit

Bodysuits are AMAZING for de-emphasizing the belly area and they can be found in a variety of styles, colors and fabrics.  Some of my favorites can be found here.

Shapewear and High Waisted Panties

Shapewear or high waisted panties are a great option if you are interested in tightening up your tummy area.  It can look great under a bodysuit, although it can feel restrictive too so you’ll definitely want to practice wearing it first to make sure you can still move around comfortably in it during your shoot.  Shapewear can be found anywhere they sell lingerie or you can simply order it from Amazon.

Teddies and Lingerie

Teddies and lingerie are always a sexy option. Teddies sometimes come with attached garter straps which can be a fun and sexy addition to your outfit.  For lingerie, you may want to consider a strappy option which can add a wild, more edgy look to your outfit. Victoria’s Secret always has great options that you can find here.

Corsets are NOT recommended because they are typically not flattering and are more of a dated look anyway. They usually look fine when standing, but when you sit in them, your skin is forced to spill out the sides and the plastic boning built into them isn’t flexible and doesn’t allow for comfortable movement during your session.  If you like this cinched look, I would go with the shape wear instead and put a bodysuit over top of it.

Babydolls are tempting as they are girly and cute, but for boudoir shoots, they aren’t the most flattering option.  They can make the thinnest of ladies look heavier simply due to the extra fabric. We want you to look your best, so wouldn’t recommend this look.

Here’s a list of places that we would recommend shopping for your outfits in a variety of price ranges:

Fredericks of Hollywood  (www.fredericks.com) Although this is a pricier option, their lingerie is on point and they have great options for gartered lingerie especially.  They sometimes have 50% off flash sales, so be on the look-out for those too.

Yandy (www.yandy.com) This is a more affordable option and they have a well rounded selection of lingerie.  They also have a beautiful plus size line for our curvier babes.

Victoria’s Secret  (www.victoriassecret.com) Victoria’s Secret has an option for everyone and we like how they will measure you before shopping. Almost everyone has a local shop so you don’t have to wait for outfits to arrive when purchasing them online.

Torrid (www.torrid.com). Torrid is a great, affordable option and has a wide selection for our curvier babes too.

La Senza (www.lasenza.com). La Senza is mid-range for pricing and they have frequent flash sales too.  They have great bra and panty sets and lots of edgier options too.

Forever 21 (www.forever21.com). This is a great place to get very affordable bodysuits in a variety of styles and fabrics.
